In Sioux City, Iowa, on Saturday, the Sioux City Human Rights Commission and the Inclusive Sioux City Advisory Committee put on a presentation. The aim was to teach people about their rights when dealing with Immigration.
The event took place at the Sioux City Downtown Library. It was for both immigrants and non – immigrants. They learned about the rights people have if they get stopped by immigration officials.
The commission wants everyone to be aware that even if someone is in the US without proper legal status, they still have rights.
Karen Mackey, the Executive Director of the Sioux City Human Rights Commission, said, “Even if you are not here legally, or you are not a citizen of the United States, if you are present in the United States, you have legal rights. Everyone has rights in this country. We’re reviewing those. What to do if you’re stopped. For example, if you’re driving, or if immigration comes to your workplace or to your home, we’ll tell you what your legal rights are. We’ll also explain what you can say and what you should avoid doing.”
If you missed Saturday’s meeting and want more information, you can visit the Human Rights Commission office. It’s on the fourth floor of Sioux City’s City hall.
