In Washington, DC, during US President Donald Trump’s big push against illegal immigration, his administration is giving polygraph tests to its own workers. This is to find people who might have leaked information to the media about the raids on migrants. According to CBS News, which quoted Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem, these polygraph tests have been going on for about three weeks.
It’s still not known how many employees have taken the tests. But on Friday, in a social media post, Noem said DHS has found two people who leaked information. These leakers will be prosecuted because they put the lives of law enforcement officers in danger.
She wrote on X along with a video, “We have identified criminal leakers within @DHSgov and are preparing to refer these perpetrators to the @TheJusticeDept for felony prosecutions. These individuals face up to 10 years in federal prison.
We will find and root out all leakers. They will face prison time & we will get justice for the American people.”
It was on February 18 that Noem first said DHS would start giving polygraphs to employees to stop media leaks.
Trump’s Crackdown On Illegal Immigration
Since Trump came back to the White House in January, his administration has been very forceful in trying to keep the President’s campaign promise. That promise was to crack down on illegal immigration and carry out mass deportations of undocumented immigrants.
According to White House data, more than 50,000 undocumented immigrants have been removed. The administration is going after criminals, like killers, rapists, and drug traffickers.
The administration has asked several agencies, such as the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Drug Enforcement Administration, to send people to help with this effort. The Trump administration also got rid of former President Joe Biden’s policy. That policy had stopped immigration agents from making arrests near schools, places of worship, and other sensitive spots. This change is now facing legal challenges.
In late January, the DHS Secretary told CBS News that filming and showing the immigration raids done by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement was an “accountability measure”.
Noem said, “It’s not a spectacle. This is our nation’s law enforcement – judicial process. The scales of justice are equally applied to everybody. We want transparency on this. I believe that this is an accountability measure.”
