The University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University, along with MPs, NHS representatives, the Mayor of South Yorkshire, business leaders, and local councils, have signed a statement reaffirming their support for international students in the region.
International students bring significant economic benefits to Sheffield, with the 2022/23 cohort contributing a net economic impact of £771 million to the city and £914 million to South Yorkshire. Each year, students from over 150 countries study and work in the area, enhancing the local economy.
Experts Highlight the Positive Impact of International Students
Professor Liz Mossop, Vice-Chancellor of Sheffield Hallam University, stated, “We are proud to welcome international students. They bring diverse perspectives, innovative ideas, and global connections that enrich our communities and highlight the importance of global citizenship.”
Professor Koen Lamberts, President of the University of Sheffield, commented, “We are honored that students from around the world choose to study here. Their contributions extend beyond our campuses and positively impact all our communities. This statement underscores Sheffield and South Yorkshire’s appreciation for their role.”
Abtisam Mohamed, MP for Sheffield Central and Co-Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for International Students, added, “Sheffield is enriched by international students in countless ways. I am proud that Sheffield Central offers a safe, welcoming home alongside world-class education, and I’m glad to see leaders unite in supporting them.”
