As demand for U.S. education continues to grow, many Vietnamese parents are turning to consultancy services to help navigate the complex college application process. The cost of these services varies widely, with some parents spending as much as VND1 billion (around $39,000), while the average cost typically ranges from VND10 million to VND100 million.
The popularity of these consultancy services is driven by the challenges of the U.S. education system, which includes thousands of universities and a highly detailed application process. For many families, professional help offers a way to streamline the process and increase their child’s chances of being admitted to top-tier universities.
Nguyen Mai, a parent from Hanoi, shared her experience seeking advice for her daughter’s U.S. college application. Last year, she was offered packages priced at $5,000, $10,000, and $30,000 from a well-known consultancy company. After consulting with friends, she opted for the $10,000 package, which promised assistance in applying to about 20 universities, mainly ranked in the top 30-100 in the U.S. “I didn’t choose the $5,000 package because it only offered basic guidance, and my daughter would have to write the essays and complete the paperwork herself,” Mai explained.
Similarly, another Hanoi parent, Thanh, faced a $7,000 quote from an English and SAT training center, with just 10 days before the application deadline. Unsatisfied with the price, she chose an independent consultant who charged VND20 million ($780) and assisted her in applying to three top-100 schools.
In Ho Chi Minh City, a local study consultancy center director explained that fees vary greatly depending on the student’s choice of school. Applications to community colleges begin at around VND10 million, while applications to prestigious universities, including Ivy League schools, can cost much more. The higher costs are often associated with longer preparation timelines, starting as early as 8th grade, and additional activities such as scientific research and international competitions. “For families aiming for top-tier schools, the fees can reach up to VND100 million, which covers applications to 10 schools,” the director said.
Phoebe Tran, Director of Crimson Education Vietnam, shared that their fees range from $15,000 to $20,000, offering a comprehensive range of services, including personalized application strategies, tutoring, extracurricular activity guidance, essay writing, interview preparation, scientific research support, internship programs, and international exam coaching. “Our service isn’t limited by the number of applications or the prestige of schools but is tailored to meet the family’s specific goals,” Tran said.
Internationally, U.S. consultancy fees also vary. According to a 2018 survey by the Independent Educational Consultants Association (IECA), the average rate for consultants is about $250 per hour, with comprehensive packages ranging from $4,000 to $10,000.
However, some experts believe not all students need a consultant. For those without the financial means, handling the application process independently is still an option. By researching schools, developing a well-structured plan, and using the Common App platform, students can navigate the process on their own.
The U.S. university application cycle has two main periods: early admission (with deadlines around November 15) and regular decision (with deadlines in January). While consultancy services are popular, many students still apply successfully without professional help if they are well-prepared and organized.
Vietnam remains one of the top countries sending students to the U.S. During the 2023-2024 school year, 22,066 Vietnamese students were enrolled in U.S. institutions, making them the 6th-largest international student community in the country, according to the Open Doors report by the Institute of International Education (IIE).
