On Sunday, different faith groups came together at the Unitarian Church. They held an information session. The session was about Evanston’s Welcoming City Ordinance. It also covered tips on dealing with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers. And it taught people how to read a judicial search warrant.
Cmdr. Scott Sophier from the Evanston Police Department, Liza Roberson – Young (the Chief Legislative Policy Advisor for the City of Evanston), Rev. Luke Harris – Ferree from Grace Lutheran Church, and Rev. Eileen Wiviott from the Unitarian Church spoke at the meeting. They made it clear that immigration enforcement is only the job of the federal government. Everyone has the right to say no to ICE officers. They can do this unless the officers show a real judicial search warrant.
