This past Tuesday, the Council of Ministers gave the go – ahead for Spain to sign an agreement with Uzbekistan. The deal is about mutual visa exemption for holders of diplomatic passports.
The aim of this bilateral agreement is to boost and strengthen the friendship and cooperation between the two countries. It also makes it easier for holders of diplomatic passports to move around freely. The agreement applies to both Spanish and Uzbek nationals who have valid and current diplomatic passports.
The ability to make agreements to waive visa requirements for diplomatic passports comes from Regulation (EU) 2018/1806 of 14 November 2018. This regulation not only decides which third – country nationals need visas when crossing the external borders of EU member states. It also allows exceptions to the visa requirement for third – country nationals with diplomatic, service, official, or special passports.
Right now, if a Spanish citizen wants to travel to Uzbekistan for more than thirty days, they have to apply for a visa. But, for tourism, they can travel without a visa as long as their stay is no more than thirty days. This thirty – day visa – free rule is for tourists with all types of passports, like diplomatic, service, official, and ordinary ones. So, because of this new agreement, people with diplomatic passports from either Spain or Uzbekistan will be able to stay in the other country for over thirty days without getting a visa.
