Earlier this month, before Pope Francis, 88, was hospitalized, he sharply criticized the Trump administration’s stance on immigration. In a letter to American bishops, the pope emphasized that many migrants are fleeing extreme poverty, violence, persecution, and environmental collapse. He cautioned U.S. officials, including President Trump, that “what is built on the basis of force, and not on the truth about the equal dignity of every human being, begins badly and will end badly.”
Tom Homan, the president’s former immigration czar, responded to the pope’s remarks during a Fox News interview. Homan, a lifelong Catholic, said, “I’ve got harsh words for the pope: He should focus on his work and leave enforcement to us. He’s got a wall around the Vatican, doesn’t he?”
Monsignor Kevin Sullivan, Executive Director of Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New York, appeared on Capital Tonight with host Susan Arbetter to discuss the Trump administration’s immigration policies. Sullivan addressed the sensitive issue of deporting migrants who have committed crimes while in the U.S., expressing his views on the moral and humanitarian aspects of the policy.
