The Clemson MBA Program is launching a new study abroad opportunity in Scotland this summer. Craig Wallace, Chair of the Department of Management, and Matt Hersel, Assistant Professor of Management, will co-teach the program in Scotland this June. This initiative is part of Clemson MBA’s ongoing effort to expand international opportunities for students.
For the past decade, Clemson has offered a popular study abroad program in Oxford, where students gain hands-on experience in international business strategy and global leadership. “It’s been rewarding to see how this international experience, combined with MBA coursework, helps students grow professionally,” said Jane Layton, MBA Academic Program Director. “Feedback from both students and employers highlights the importance of a global business perspective. We are excited to now expand this opportunity to Scotland.”
Students participating in the Scotland program will engage directly with business leaders in the country. While some coursework will take place in the classroom, much of the learning will come from site visits across Scotland, including locations in Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Killin. The three-credit course, MBA 8990 Leadership Development, will cover four main areas:
Pre-departure discussions to prepare for site visits and activities.
Creation of a personal leadership development plan.
A team-based leadership consulting project for a Scottish company, with presentations made to partners during the trip.
Reflection assignments based on site visits and experiences.
The program runs from June 23 to July 4, with a free weekend for personal travel. “During this first trip to Scotland, students will explore historic leadership through a modern lens, while experiencing the country’s stunning landscapes and innovative industries,” said Wallace. “This unique adventure will uncover Scotland’s rich leadership legacy across various sectors, from golf and whisky to global consulting.”
Clemson MBA is proud to broaden its study abroad offerings, providing valuable opportunities for both young and working professionals to deepen their global business knowledge. “We are committed to expanding international study opportunities that enhance the value of our students in the marketplace,” said Greg Pickett, Ph.D., Director of the Clemson MBA Program. “This experience in Scotland will build on classroom learning and prepare our students for leadership roles worldwide.”
