Alaina Majkrzak, a junior in the Bluegrass, Old-Time, and Roots Music program at East Tennessee State University (ETSU), has been awarded the prestigious Gilman International Scholarship from the U.S. Department of State. This scholarship promotes international travel, language learning, and hands-on internship opportunities.
Majkrzak will use the scholarship to support her study abroad program at the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance at the University of Limerick during this semester.
“Each cycle, our Gilman applicants dedicate significant time and effort to their applications. They are also encouraged to reflect on the importance of international education,” said Cassidy Blackwell, ETSU’s Gilman award specialist. Blackwell provides workshops and guidance to help students through the application process. “Our goal is for students to develop skills that will contribute to their success at ETSU and beyond.”
Chris Medley, director of ETSU’s Office of Prestigious Awards, highlighted the significance of the Gilman program.
“Recruiting and advising for the Gilman Scholarship is some of the most important work we do,” Medley said. “It provides education abroad opportunities to students who may not have had the chance otherwise.”
As part of the scholarship, Gilman recipients are required to complete a service project after their study abroad experience. This project aims to share the benefits of studying abroad and encourage future students to apply for the scholarship. The service projects help foster community involvement and inspire others to pursue international education opportunities.
