When I was 13, my family moved from Amsterdam to Los Angeles. Studying at UCSB for my undergraduate degree has been my own version of studying abroad. It introduced me to a new language and culture, helped me form lifelong friendships, and taught me to embrace every adventure that comes my way. A new environment can be challenging, but it broadens your perspective and makes you a more seasoned and open-minded traveler.
Where Do I Start?
The first step is to stay informed. Sign up for the UCEAP newsletter! By completing a short Google form, you can share your interests, and the department will send you updates and reminders about programs that align with your goals.
Academic Planning
All UCEAP applicants must submit an Academic Planning Form (APF) with their application. To get started, meet with an advisor to discuss your degree requirements and ensure that your study abroad courses will keep you on track. UCSB’s EAP Regional Advisors can help determine if your courses align with your major or minor and answer any questions you might have.
Need a Passport? Here’s How to Get One
A valid passport is required for all UCEAP applicants. Some programs even ask that you have it when you apply. Keep in mind that passport applications can take several weeks, so make sure to plan ahead. Be sure to check the UCEAP program-specific instructions for passport deadlines. Having a passport is not only necessary for your study abroad experience but also an essential investment for future international travel.
Costs and Scholarships
While studying abroad is an incredible opportunity, it does come with costs. Flights, accommodations, meals, and other day-to-day expenses can add up. Plus, you’ll want to travel and explore, making budgeting and scholarships crucial to making your dream of studying abroad a reality. On the UCEAP website, you can select your program and access a detailed cost estimate for both in-state and out-of-state students. It breaks down each expense category, so you’ll know exactly what to expect financially. The website also outlines scholarship opportunities for 2025-2026 programs. If you have specific questions, you can reach out to UCEAP’s scholarship team at [email protected].
Embrace the Journey
Studying abroad is not just about academics; it’s about embracing a life-changing experience that takes you out of your comfort zone. Whether you’re dreaming of exploring Europe or immersing yourself in a new culture halfway across the world, this is your opportunity to grow. It’s about finding your independence, adjusting to a new environment, and learning to navigate life in a completely different setting. Embrace the adventure, and let it shape who you are!
