As Donald Trump campaigns for a second term, he has made bold promises, many of which could be carried out through executive orders. Here’s a closer look at some of his key proposals.
Immigration Trump has pledged a tough approach to the estimated 11 million undocumented migrants in the U.S. He plans to declare a state of emergency at the Mexico border, unlocking additional funding and resources from the Department of Defense.
Trump also aims to end birthright citizenship, which he has called “ridiculous.” He could also issue executive orders addressing other aspects of immigration, including potentially terminating an app used by migrants to apply for asylum.
However, birthright citizenship is guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution, and any deportation program would face legal obstacles, including resistance from some countries to accept deportees.
Trade Wars Trump has promised to impose a 25% tariff on goods imported from Mexico and Canada, claiming that these nations have failed to stop the flow of drugs and undocumented migrants into the U.S.
While some see this as negotiating tactics, Trump has also threatened China with a 10% tariff on products, building on tariffs from his first term. He accuses China of not cracking down on fentanyl production.
January 6 Pardons Trump has suggested he may pardon those involved in the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot, which aimed to overturn the 2020 election results. He referred to the rioters as “political prisoners” and promised his supporters would be pleased with his decision.
Over 1,500 people have been charged, with more than 1,100 convicted.
Wars and Diplomacy Trump has warned that the Middle East could erupt if Hamas does not release Israeli hostages before his inauguration. He also took credit for a ceasefire and hostage release deal brokered by the Biden administration.
Regarding Russia’s war in Ukraine, Trump has said he plans to end it quickly, though details of how or when remain unclear.
Climate Trump, a climate skeptic, has promised to ramp up oil and gas drilling. He plans to repeal key climate policies of the Biden administration, such as tax credits for electric vehicles, and wants to boost offshore drilling—though this may require congressional approval.
Transgender Rights and Race On day one, Trump has vowed to end what he calls “transgender lunacy.” His plans include banning transgender individuals from the military, prohibiting gender-related teachings in schools, and limiting the recognition of gender to male and female. Additionally, he wants to cut federal funding to schools teaching critical race theory.
TikTok Lifeline Trump has promised to protect the Chinese-owned app TikTok, which has faced a potential U.S. ban due to national security concerns. He suggested that a U.S. joint venture could allow for a compromise, claiming the app connects him with younger voters.
These are just a few of the major promises Trump has made as he campaigns for a second term. Many of them remain vague, and much of his agenda will likely be shaped by executive orders if he is elected again.
