Harvard University has outlined the key steps and eligibility criteria for students sponsored by the university on the J-1 visa. This visa is typically used by international students participating in programs such as Fulbright, DAAD, AmidEast, and others, and it can also be issued for Harvard degree programs to help international students study in the U.S.
According to a statement from Harvard, students must present a Form DS-2019, issued by their Exchange Visitor sponsor, when applying for a J-1 or J-2 visa (for dependents) at a U.S. embassy or consulate.
Eligibility for Harvard-Sponsored J-1 Visa
To qualify for a Harvard-sponsored J-1 visa, students must meet these criteria:
- At least 50% of their tuition must be funded by sources other than personal loans, such as official scholarships, employers, or government agencies.
- Government scholarships or funding from official agencies must be used in conjunction with the J-1 visa for the student’s eligibility.
Requirements for J-1 Students at Harvard
Harvard-sponsored J-1 students must adhere to the following:

Full-Time Enrollment: Students must remain enrolled full-time every fall and spring semester. If a student needs to take a break from studies, they must contact the HIO immediately.

For other types of employment, students need written permission from the HIO or, if sponsored by another institution, from that institution.
Health Insurance: J-1 students must maintain valid health insurance throughout their stay in the U.S.
Address Changes: Students must update their address through the Change of Address section on Harvard’s official website.
Travel Plans: Before traveling, students must consult with an advisor and ensure they have all required documents.
Program Withdrawal: If a student decides to withdraw early from their program, they must notify their HIO advisor and obtain approval.
Changing Schools or Departments: Any changes to their academic program or department must be discussed with an HIO advisor in advance.
Lastly, students must ensure their DS-2019 form remains valid throughout the duration of their exchange program.
