Alabama State University (ASU) junior Calandrea Carter is embracing a unique opportunity to expand her global perspective through a study-abroad program in Italy, thanks to a national fellowship from the American Institute for Foreign Study. The program, supported by The ASU Foundation, began on January 1 and will run until January 18.
Carter, a journalism major, is immersing herself in Italy’s vibrant culture and educational landscape. She has already explored Florence and is set to visit Milan in the coming days. Notably, Carter is the only student from a Historically Black College or University (HBCU) selected for this fellowship.
“I’m extremely grateful to ASU for making this experience possible,” Carter said. “This opportunity emphasizes the importance of cultural understanding, global awareness, and social literacy, and I’m proud to represent ASU on the international stage.”
In Florence, Carter has fully embraced the city’s rich history, enjoying local cuisine, visiting landmarks, and gaining new insights into Italian culture.
Reflecting on her selection for the fellowship, Carter acknowledges the strong educational foundation provided by ASU, as well as the continuous support of her parents, Cleve and Aimee Carter.
“Thank you, ASU, for broadening my education on a global scale and for empowering students like me to break barriers,” she said from Italy. “I’m excited to bring this experience back to inspire others on campus. ASU is truly where history is made.”
