For short-term programs, the government intends to subsidize up to 900,000 yen, covering travel and tuition costs.
For longer-term studies, Tokyo aims to offer up to 3.15 million yen annually, which will cover travel, tuition, and local activity expenses.
Applicants must have a guardian who is a resident of Tokyo, and there is no income limit for eligibility.
The government has committed to supporting 500 students each year for short-term programs and 100 students annually for medium- to long-term programs.
Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike stressed the importance of investing in young people to help them contribute globally.
A budget of 100 million yen has been allocated for this initiative in the fiscal year 2025 draft.
