JOHOR BARU: A total of 49 people, including five local men, were arrested during a large-scale immigration enforcement operation in Johor. The operation, called “Ops Gegar,” was carried out by the Johor Immigration Department on January 10.
Datuk Mohd Rusdi Mohd Darus, director of the Johor Immigration Department, said the operation took place at four locations in Kluang, Johor. A total of 90 individuals, both local and foreign, were inspected during the operation.
The five local men arrested, believed to be caretakers of the premises, were aged between 25 and 41.
Among the foreign detainees were 27 Vietnamese women, three Indonesian men, nine Indonesian women, two Thai women, two Bangladeshi men, and one Nepali man. The detainees, aged between 21 and 48, were arrested for suspected violations of the Immigration Act 1959/63 and Immigration Regulations 1963.
The local men were detained under Section 56(1)(d) of the Immigration Act for allegedly harboring illegal immigrants. Six notices were also issued to individuals, requiring them to appear at the immigration office for further investigation.
All detainees are now being held at the Setia Tropika Immigration Depot for further action.
Mohd Rusdi noted a growing issue of foreign nationals misusing their permits by working illegally and engaging in immoral activities. He emphasized that the Immigration Department would take strict action against employers and premises owners who hire foreign workers without proper travel documents or work permits.
