If you’re planning to study abroad in the summer or fall of 2025, it’s important to start the passport application process now. Passport processing can take a while, and you will need a valid passport before applying for a visa.
If you don’t have a passport yet, or if you need to renew it, winter break is the perfect time to apply. Your passport must be valid for at least six months after your planned return date. For example, if you plan to return home by December 15, 2025, your passport should be valid until at least June 15, 2026.
Passport Processing Times
As of December 18, 2024, the US State Department lists the following processing times for passports:
Routine service: 4-6 weeks
Expedited service (for an extra $60 fee): 2-3 weeks
Note that these processing times start when your application is received at a passport agency, not when you mail your application. It could take up to two weeks for your application to reach the agency, and another two weeks for your completed passport to be mailed back to you.
Additional Passport Information
A valid passport is essential to apply for a visa, which is required for many study abroad programs. Visas can also take time to process, so it’s best to get your passport as early as possible to avoid delays.
Start your application now to ensure you have everything ready in time for your study abroad experience!
