As a 6th-year MBBS student at Orel State University in Russia, my journey from Sumerpur, Rajasthan, has been one of the most unforgettable experiences of my life. The main reason I chose to pursue my medical education in Russia was affordability. Higher education in Russia is significantly cheaper than in India, where pursuing the same degree requires passing competitive exams.
Moving to Russia brought a mix of challenges and opportunities. I had the chance to explore the beauty of cities like Moscow, though the cold weather was something I needed time to get used to. The language barrier was also a major hurdle at first. Fortunately, my university offers English language courses, which made the transition smoother.
Living in Oryol City for the past five years has contributed to my growth in many ways. In addition to the academic challenges, I had to learn essential life skills such as cooking and managing daily responsibilities. The university culture has also been a great support, with cultural programs where I can share Indian traditions with others.
Like most international students, I experienced intense homesickness during my first year. However, the friendships I formed helped me cope, and spending time with friends became a source of comfort. Studying abroad can be financially demanding, leading many students to take on part-time jobs to cover costs like food and daily necessities. Learning to manage my finances became just as important as my academic work.
To manage expenses wisely, I learned to track my spending and create a detailed budget. Prioritizing needs over wants was crucial for maintaining financial stability. Cooking my own meals instead of eating out, sharing expenses with roommates, and using public transport helped me save significantly. I also made sure to avoid impulse purchases and managed cash carefully.
