The Evanston City Council will meet on Monday evening to discuss several important issues, including a proposed amendment to the city’s immigration policy and the long-term development plan, Envision Evanston 2045.
One of the key items on the agenda is an amendment to the city’s Welcoming City Ordinance, which would further protect immigrants from federal requirements to disclose their citizenship status. The ordinance, which aims to make Evanston “one of the most immigrant-friendly cities in the country,” prohibits city officials from participating in federal immigration enforcement and from asking about an individual’s immigration status.
The proposed amendment seeks to clarify the language of the ordinance and formally codify the current practices of the Evanston Police Department. According to a staff memorandum, the amendment is a necessary step to protect residents against a potential increase in immigration enforcement under the Trump administration. The ordinance was originally introduced in 2016, prior to Donald Trump’s first term.
