In a strategic move to boost tourism and enhance economic relations, Malaysia has extended its 30-day visa-free entry policy for Indian nationals until December 31, 2026. This extension is a part of Malaysia’s broader efforts to promote tourism and economic development ahead of the nation’s Visit Malaysia Year 2026 and its upcoming ASEAN chairmanship in 2025.
A Golden Opportunity for Indian Travelers
Saravana Kumar Kumaravasagam, the Consul General of Malaysia in Chennai, hailed the extension as a “golden opportunity” for Indian tourists. He emphasized that this initiative allows visitors from Tamil Nadu and other parts of India to experience Malaysia’s rich cultural heritage, pristine beaches, and bustling cities without the need for a visa application.
Tourism Growth Fueled by Policy and Connectivity
The move comes at a time when Malaysia is experiencing a surge in Indian tourist arrivals. According to the Malaysia Tourism Promotion Board (Tourism Malaysia), more than one million Indian tourists visited the country from January to November 2024—a 47% increase compared to 2019, and a 71.7% jump over 2023.
Tourism Malaysia credits the 2023 implementation of the visa-free entry policy as a key factor driving this growth. The simplified travel process has facilitated easier access for Indian nationals, contributing significantly to Malaysia’s tourism recovery post-pandemic.
New Air Routes Enhance Travel Options
This increase in visitors has been bolstered by expanded air connectivity between India and Malaysia. In 2024, new direct flights were introduced, including daily services by Indigo Airlines to Penang and Langkawi, in addition to existing routes to Kuala Lumpur. These new connections have further streamlined travel, encouraging more Indian nationals to explore Malaysia.
Visit Malaysia Year 2026: A Strategic Tourism Push
The extension of the visa-free policy aligns with Malaysia’s ambitions for its Visit Malaysia Year 2026 campaign. This initiative aims to attract more tourists and generate additional revenue, supporting the nation’s efforts to enhance its global tourism competitiveness and further integrate tourism into its economic landscape.
Strengthening India-Malaysia Tourism Ties
The extension of the visa-free entry policy underscores Malaysia’s commitment to strengthening its tourism relationship with India, a key source of visitors. As the two countries continue to build stronger cultural and economic ties, the policy is expected to stimulate further growth in Indian tourist arrivals, reinforcing Malaysia’s position as a top travel destination in the region.
With its diverse attractions, scenic landscapes, and increasingly simplified travel processes, Malaysia is set to welcome even more Indian travelers in the years ahead.
