In a significant move to support local students, Northeastern University has introduced the Oakland Opportunity Scholarship program, providing full scholarships to selected students from Oakland Unified School District and other Pell Grant-eligible residents. This initiative is set to make a transformative impact on higher education accessibility for students in the region.
Program Details
The Oakland Opportunity Scholarship program, launched this year, offers a comprehensive package that covers tuition, housing, food, and fees, amounting to $85,000 annually per student. This represents a substantial $3.5 million annual investment from Northeastern University. The program is designed to alleviate the financial barriers associated with pursuing a four-year university education, particularly for students from underrepresented and low-income backgrounds.
First Recipients
In its inaugural year, the program received applications from 44 students, with 15 awarded scholarships—surpassing the initial goal of 10 due to the high quality of the applicants. Among the first recipients is Nyari Wright, a recent graduate of Oakland Technical High School. Wright, who initially planned to attend community college due to financial constraints, is thrilled to have received the full scholarship.
Wright’s mother encouraged her to hold out for potential opportunities, and the scholarship program has proven to be that opportunity. “It’s a testament to Northeastern, not just here in Oakland, but in the community as a whole,” said Dan Sachs, dean of Northeastern’s Oakland campus. “This is a really big deal.”
Another scholarship recipient, Angela Cecelia Vergara, also an Oakland Technical High School graduate, shares a similar story. Vergara, who participated in Upward Bound—a federally funded program aiding first-generation college students—understands the financial challenges of higher education. She and her family, who moved from the Philippines to California during her middle school years, are deeply appreciative of the support provided by the scholarship.
Vergara remarked, “I’m really grateful to them for how they prepared me to get where I am now,” reflecting on her parents’ encouragement and the preparation she received to succeed academically.
Impact and Future Plans
The Oakland Opportunity Scholarship program represents a significant investment in the future of local students, aiming to remove financial barriers and open doors to higher education. As the program continues to support students like Wright and Vergara, it underscores Northeastern University’s commitment to fostering educational opportunities and contributing positively to the community.
With the success of its inaugural year, Northeastern University’s initiative sets a precedent for similar programs and highlights the importance of investing in educational access and equity.
