Kaitlyn Eder, a third-year law student at Drake University Law School, recently completed an enriching study abroad experience in Europe, fulfilling one of her academic and personal goals. Eder’s journey took her to Nantes Université in France, where she delved into international and European Union law while immersing herself in diverse cultures.
Eder, who had never traveled abroad before, expressed her excitement about the opportunity to study overseas during law school. “I never studied abroad in undergrad and had never been out of the country before,” she said. “So when I found out you could study abroad in law school, I was so excited to have the opportunity.”
Her experience at Nantes Université exceeded her expectations. Eder enrolled in six courses, including European Migration Law, Corporate Law, Criminal Law, and Civil Litigation. The course on European Migration Law proved particularly relevant and engaging, especially in light of current events in Ukraine.
“One of my classes was European Migration Law,” Eder shared. “It was a very interesting and informative class with everything going on in Ukraine.”
As part of the program, Eder was paired with an undergraduate student from Nantes Université, which provided her with unique insights into French life and culture. “We got to ask our ‘French buddy’ about life in France, and they could ask us about life in America,” Eder noted. “It was fun to see how different our living styles are.”
Outside of her studies, Eder explored various European destinations, including Italy, Spain, and Portugal. The weekends allowed her to experience these countries both as a tourist and through the lens of her academic learning.
Eder’s study abroad program was organized by Drake University Law School. While most participants were from Drake, Eder felt welcomed by her classmates and formed lasting connections. “I talk to one of the girls I met every day. We’ve become really close friends,” she said. “I’ll actually be going to Des Moines in a few weeks to visit all of them.”
Eder’s study abroad experience not only enriched her legal education but also offered personal growth and lifelong friendships, exemplifying the transformative impact of international academic opportunities.
