Studyportals has released new research indicating a significant shift in the preferences of prospective international students, who are increasingly considering alternatives to studying in Australia, Canada, and the UK. This change is largely attributed to recent changes in immigration policies within these countries, which have made studying there more challenging and less appealing.
The findings, detailed in the article “Winners & Losers: An Update on How Domestic Policies in the UK, Canada, and Australia Have Impacted Student Search Behavior,” underscore the growing disinterest in these traditional education hubs. According to the research, interest in on-campus bachelor’s and master’s programs in Canada and the UK saw a marked increase in January 2024. However, this interest sharply declined in February, particularly for Canada, and the downward trend continued through March before briefly stabilizing. Overall, from February to July 2024, student interest remained on a downward trajectory.
The study highlights that the stricter immigration policies and increased barriers to entry in these countries are contributing to this shift. Prospective students are now exploring other destinations that offer more favorable conditions for international education. The impact of these policy changes on student behavior reflects a broader trend of international students seeking alternative study destinations that align better with their needs and aspirations.
