The family of a Chinese man who died earlier this year at an immigration facility in Seoul has filed a lawsuit against the South Korean government, alleging negligence and inadequate medical care led to his death.
On Thursday, the bereaved family, represented by the public interest law association Duroo, held a press conference outside the Seoul Central District Court. They are seeking 56 million won (approximately US$42,000) in compensation.
The deceased, who was detained at the Seoul Southern Immigration Office in Gangseo district on December 17, 2023, passed away on January 1, 2024. He had been held for two weeks after officials discovered his visa had expired. According to the autopsy, he died from peritonitis due to a ruptured liver abscess, compounded by his severe diabetic condition.
The man’s chronic illnesses, including diabetes and high blood pressure, were reportedly exacerbated by a lack of medical attention. Despite multiple requests for help, his pleas went unanswered, the family’s lawyers claim.
During the press conference, the deceased man’s wife expressed distress over the treatment her husband received. “I visited my husband several times while he was detained, and it was clear that his health was deteriorating,” she said. “On the morning of his death, he called a friend to say he felt so ill he thought he was going to die. Yet the officials still ignored him.”
Migrant rights activists argue that this case underscores broader issues of human rights abuses within South Korea’s immigration detention facilities, where detainees are often subjected to harsh conditions and denied essential care.
