The Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) and Arizona State University (ASU) have announced a groundbreaking partnership aimed at making study abroad opportunities more accessible for students. Starting January 2025, students will be able to enroll in more than 200 global study abroad programs offered by CIEE across 40 international locations, with the added flexibility of completing coursework through ASU Online.
The collaboration will allow students to participate in study abroad programs hosted at prestigious international universities or led by CIEE faculty, while also taking advantage of ASU Online’s extensive course offerings. This integration will eliminate traditional curriculum barriers and provide greater flexibility, enabling students to maintain their academic progress towards graduation.
Nancy Gonzales, ASU’s Executive Vice President and University Provost, emphasized the transformative impact of study abroad programs: “Research has shown that studying abroad is one of the most impactful experiences a student can have. ASU is committed to expanding access to these opportunities by addressing obstacles such as cost and curriculum requirements. We are excited to partner with CIEE to make high-quality global education accessible to all students.”
ASU Online provides over 4,700 college courses across more than 300 degree programs, delivered by the same faculty who teach in-person classes. Its diverse course catalog includes high-demand subjects such as engineering, technology, business, healthcare, and environmental science.
CIEE will offer ASU Online courses at no additional cost, maintaining the affordability of its study abroad programs. This initiative is designed to tackle two major barriers to studying abroad: high program costs and curriculum constraints.
James P. Pellow, President and CEO of CIEE, praised the partnership: “Partnering with ASU, a leader in higher education innovation, aligns with our mission to expand access to global education. Together, we aim to ensure that all students, regardless of their academic requirements, can benefit from the invaluable experience of studying abroad. This collaboration will help students excel academically, enhance retention rates, and prepare them for successful careers in a globally interconnected world.”
