Marrakech – In a significant milestone for Moroccan academia, Hassan II University in Casablanca has been recognized in the 2024 edition of the Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities. This achievement underscores Morocco’s rising influence in the global academic arena.
Hassan II University has secured a position between 901st and 1000th in the overall rankings, marking a proud moment for the institution and the country. The university’s biology department has also garnered attention, ranking between 201st and 300th among global peers, highlighting its growing reputation in the field.
The Shanghai Rankings, established in 2003, are widely regarded as the gold standard for assessing university performance on the world stage. Unlike other rankings that focus primarily on teaching quality, the Shanghai Ranking places a strong emphasis on research impact, considering factors such as Nobel Prizes, Fields Medals, and the prominence of highly cited researchers.
This year’s rankings continue to see American universities dominating the global academic landscape, with Harvard University leading for the 22nd consecutive year. Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) follow closely, maintaining the United States’ stronghold at the top. In Europe, the United Kingdom’s Cambridge and Oxford universities hold the 4th and 6th positions, respectively.
The Shanghai Ranking evaluates universities based on six key criteria, including the number of Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals awarded to alumni and staff, the count of highly cited researchers recognized by Clarivate, the volume of articles published in leading journals like “Nature” and “Science,” the number of articles indexed in the “Science Citation Index Expanded” and “Social Sciences Citation Index on the Web of Science,” and the per capita academic performance of the university.
With over 2,500 institutions evaluated, making it into the rankings is a significant achievement, reflecting the institutions’ academic prestige. Hassan II University’s inclusion is not only a testament to the university’s hard work and dedication but also a clear indicator of Morocco’s growing presence on the global academic stage.
