The Swedish government is set to tighten the conditions for immigration based on family ties. To address this issue comprehensively, a commission has been established, as reported by the government office and Azernews.
Last autumn, changes to migration legislation restricted the possibility of foreign citizens moving to Sweden for permanent residence based on family ties. Despite these changes, Sweden’s laws and international obligations remain more generous than EU requirements.
Migration Minister Maria Malmer Steenergaard commented, “The large-scale migration of recent years, combined with inadequate integration, has led to serious issues with growing isolation. Revising and further tightening conditions for family migration is essential to ensure a responsible, strict, and sustainable migration policy in the long term.”
