Indonesia is preparing to implement visa-free entry for tourists from 20 countries, including India, as part of a new tourism initiative. Sandiaga Uno, Indonesia’s tourism minister, announced that the policy is nearing finalization and aims to enhance international tourism in the country.
Besides India, the proposed visa waiver would apply to several other key nations, including Australia, China, Japan, the U.S., South Korea, France, Germany, Qatar, the United Kingdom, and the United Arab Emirates.
This initiative follows a previous consideration by the Indonesian government last year, which aimed to implement the policy by January. Once approved, Indian tourists visiting Indonesia, who currently obtain visas on arrival either online or at Indonesian airports, would benefit from easier entry requirements.
In 2023, Indonesia welcomed over 600,000 Indian tourists, establishing India as one of its top 10 largest source markets. From January to March 2024, more than 30,000 Indian passengers departed for Indonesia, reflecting continued interest in travel between the two countries.
The potential visa waiver for Indians aligns with similar measures adopted by countries like Thailand, Sri Lanka, Iran, and Malaysia. This trend underscores efforts to facilitate tourism and strengthen bilateral relations through streamlined travel procedures.
Indonesia’s move is expected to bolster its tourism sector significantly, offering enhanced accessibility and appeal to international visitors, including those from India.
