Jessica Valatka has been named the recipient of the 2024 City of Salem and Waste Management Scholarship, a prestigious $1,000 award presented annually to a student committed to advancing environmental sustainability through higher education.
Jessica, a lifelong resident of Salem and graduate of Salem Public Schools, distinguished herself with an insightful essay proposing initiatives to enhance environmental sustainability within the city. Her proposals included the creation of more community gardens, improvements in bike safety and accessibility, and increased climate change education.
Mayor Dominick Pangallo congratulated Jessica on her achievement, commending her for the depth of research and forward-thinking ideas expressed in her essay. “I’m delighted to extend my congratulations to Jessica for winning this award,” Mayor Pangallo remarked. “Her essay demonstrates a keen understanding of the environmental challenges facing our community and offers practical solutions to promote sustainability.”
Jessica is currently pursuing a degree in Resource Economics at UMass Amherst, with a focus on Sustainable Urban Planning & Design. Her academic interests align closely with her vision for incorporating sustainable infrastructure into urban environments, making eco-friendly choices accessible and affordable for all residents. She aims to contribute to the development of cities that prioritize sustainability, fostering healthier lifestyles and reducing environmental impact.
