Leo Alaghband ’24 and Zongqi “Tim” Zhai ’24, two graduating seniors from Pomona College, have been awarded the prestigious Downing Scholarship to pursue master’s degrees at Downing College, University of Cambridge, starting this fall. This scholarship, offered annually, covers tuition, fees, living expenses, airfare, and allowances for books and other academic needs during their year at Cambridge.
Zongqi “Tim” Zhai, a history major with a minor in classics, focused his senior thesis on “Demosthenes’ Ghost: Athenian Imperial Ideology in the Olynthiacs.” His research delved into the speeches of Demosthenes, examining Greek political and oratory history post-Athenian empire. Zhai expressed excitement about immersing himself in Cambridge’s academic environment, highlighting the opportunity to engage with top scholars and courses, which he believes will significantly impact his academic journey. He sees this experience as pivotal in shaping his career path, considering both academia and potentially law school.
Similarly, Leo Alaghband, who majored in history with a minor in physics, explored a fascinating topic in his senior thesis: the interconnected histories of Mexico and Iran from the mid-19th to the 20th century. His research underscored the parallels between the two countries during periods of revolution and how each nation’s literature reflected domestic concerns through comparisons. Alaghband, fluent in Persian and Spanish, plans to further his research at Cambridge, aiming towards a Ph.D. in global history, Middle Eastern studies, or Latin American studies.
Both scholars anticipate the possibility of returning to Cambridge for doctoral studies in the future. They look forward to the unique academic environment and diverse perspectives Cambridge offers, preparing them for their scholarly pursuits and future careers.
The Downing Scholarship’s support for Leo Alaghband and Zongqi “Tim” Zhai underscores Pomona College’s commitment to fostering academic excellence and global engagement among its students.
