Owen-Pole, a student at Hugh Sutherland School, has emerged as the recipient of the esteemed Schulich Leader Scholarship, paving her path to Dalhousie University. Reflecting on her achievement, she expressed, “It’s truly amazing. I’m still in disbelief. It’s been a journey marked by hard work and dedication, and the opportunity bestowed upon me by this scholarship, along with Dalhousie’s offer, is incredible. I’m eagerly anticipating what lies ahead.”
This coveted national scholarship, valued at $100,000, will enable the 17-year-old to transition from Hugh Sutherland School in Carstairs to Halifax, Nova Scotia, this autumn. Owen-Pole credited her involvement in extracurricular activities, particularly her active participation in the Cadet program, tutoring initiatives, and music teaching endeavors, for bolstering her scholarship application. She emphasized the pivotal role played by her mentors and teachers in her academic journey.
For Owen-Pole, the Air Cadets hold profound significance. Having joined the program on her 12th birthday and recently completing her sixth year, she attributed much of her personal growth to the Cadet program, acknowledging its transformative impact on her life.
Additionally, Owen-Pole showcased her athletic prowess by engaging in football for three seasons, excelling as a wide receiver and defensive back, including a notable stint with the Kodiaks at Hugh Sutherland School.
Elaborating on the selection process, Owen-Pole revealed her elation upon learning of her win, recalling an emotional phone call to her father during a school trip. Overwhelmed with joy, she recounted breaking the news to her father, eliciting tears of happiness from both parties.
Owen-Pole’s passion for mathematics, particularly calculus, coupled with the guidance of her esteemed teacher, Mr. Alex Gardner, has been instrumental in shaping her academic journey.
