In a poignant tribute to the memory of football players Devin Chandler, Lavel Davis Jr., and D’Sean Perry, tragically lost to gun violence after a field trip in November 2022, the Virginia Cavaliers have launched the 1.15.41 Memorial Scholarship Fund.
Announced jointly by the Virginia Athletics Foundation and Virginia Athletics on Tuesday, this scholarship fund aims to perpetuate the legacy of the three young men by annually awarding scholarships to three football players who epitomize their remarkable qualities.
The establishment of the fund, named after the jersey numbers of the three players – 1, 15, and 41, was made possible through the generous contribution of an anonymous donor who pledged $1 million.
“The 1.15.41 Memorial Fund is a powerful reminder and testament to the impact of Devin, Lavel, and D’Sean,” remarked athletic director Carla Williams in a statement. “Their memory lives on through the recipients of this scholarship, and we are extremely grateful for the establishment of this endowment.”
Virginia’s commitment to honoring the legacy of the fallen players extends beyond scholarship initiatives. Last week, the university unveiled a new football operations center, featuring a tribute to Chandler, Davis Jr., and Perry. The center’s first-floor display proudly showcases their jerseys, serving as a lasting tribute to their enduring spirit and contribution to the Cavaliers’ football program.
Moreover, in recognition of the immeasurable loss suffered by their families and the wounded students, including running back Mike Hollins, Virginia announced a $9 million settlement.
The trial of Christopher Darnell Jones Jr., a former UVA student charged in connection with the tragedy, is scheduled for January. Charged with multiple counts, including second-degree murder and the use of a firearm, Jones Jr.’s trial stands as a somber reminder of the need for continued efforts to address gun violence and promote safety on campuses.
