The announcement of these prestigious awards was made by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation last week.
These scholarships offer financial assistance ranging from $500 to $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate studies at the respective institutions sponsoring the scholarships.
Participants in the 2024 National Merit Scholarship Program were high school juniors who took the 2022 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Over 16,000 Semifinalists were identified last fall, representing the highest-scoring program entrants in each state, comprising less than one percent of the nation’s senior students.
To vie for the Merit Scholarship awards, Semifinalists were required to advance to the Finalist level by meeting additional criteria. This included submitting a comprehensive scholarship application, encompassing an essay, details of extracurricular activities, awards, leadership roles, and maintaining an exceptional academic record. Additionally, they needed an endorsement and recommendation from a high school official, along with SAT or ACT scores confirming their qualifying test performance. Out of the semifinalist cohort, over 15,000 met the rigorous requirements for Finalist standing, with approximately half expected to be named as Merit Scholarship recipients in 2024.
