Studying abroad offers students a transformative opportunity to experience a new country while advancing their academic and professional goals. For Cal State Fullerton student Kyle McCaghren, Japan emerged as his destination of choice after he received a prestigious scholarship.
McCaghren, a communications major specializing in journalism, was awarded the Freeman Asia Scholarship by the Institute of International Education. He will spend the 2024-25 academic year studying at Okayama University in Okayama, Japan.
McCaghren’s interest in Japanese culture began about three years ago. “I work as a play-by-play commentator in esports and was given the chance to do online English broadcasts for events hosted in Japan by Japanese esports organizations,” he said. “Since then, I’ve been delving into various aspects of Japanese culture, including the language, history, music, and pop culture, which has only deepened my interest and desire to experience Japan firsthand.”
At Okayama University, McCaghren will focus primarily on language studies. “I will take courses in Japanese reading and writing, grammar and vocabulary, and conversational Japanese,” he explained. Additionally, he will study intercultural communications and Japanese history.
Beyond academics, McCaghren is eager to immerse himself in Japan’s rich culture, from the cuisine and history to the people and language. “I have long been fascinated by all these aspects and want to experience as much as possible during my time there,” he said. “I’m also looking forward to finally meeting the friends who introduced me to Japanese culture through my work a few years ago.”
In addition to the Freeman Asia Scholarship, McCaghren received the John and Jessie Maxwell Scholarship, the Tom Pasqua Scholarship, and the Bergstrom Family Scholarship. He encourages other students to apply for scholarships, stressing the importance of giving oneself a chance.
“I never expected to receive any scholarships when I submitted my applications, but if I hadn’t tried, I wouldn’t have had the opportunity,” he noted. “Receiving the Freeman Asia Award, along with three other scholarships, has provided immense financial relief, an experience I wouldn’t have had without applying.”
McCaghren’s journey highlights the importance of perseverance and the potential rewards of seeking scholarship opportunities.
