Marleigh Lang, a double alumna of the University of Washington, fondly recalls her graduations, the first in 1968 and the second in 2006. Her journey through rigorous academic programs culminated in pride and achievement, especially with her family by her side. Among her supporters was her oldest daughter, Natalie Lang, a 1997 graduate of UW Bothell, whose life and legacy continue to inspire.
Natalie Lang was a dynamic individual whose passions spanned from literature and music to community service and student advocacy. Despite battling kidney disease and diabetes, she maintained a steadfast commitment to helping others, particularly international students at UW Bothell. Her role as an international student adviser allowed her to support students beyond the typical scope of her duties, often assisting them with challenges related to immigration and financial needs.
Natalie’s dedication led to the creation of the International Student Scholarship at UW Bothell. This scholarship, aimed at F-1 visa holders and recent permanent residents, provides vital tuition assistance and addresses unexpected financial hurdles that international students often face.
“She had a passion for working with international students and would take calls from them even when she was in the hospital,” Marleigh Lang said. Natalie’s contributions were so impactful that, even as she lay on her deathbed, her primary concern was ensuring the continuity of the scholarship fund she had established.
After Natalie passed away in 2007, Marleigh and her family honored her legacy by establishing an endowment in her name. The Natalie K. Lang International Student Scholarship continues to provide crucial support to students, reflecting Natalie’s lifelong dedication to education and community service.
Marleigh’s own journey at the University of Washington was deeply influenced by her daughter’s encouragement. Natalie’s pursuit of a master’s degree inspired Marleigh to return to school, culminating in her earning a master’s degree in nursing from UW Bothell. This shared educational journey is a testament to the family’s strong ties to the university and their commitment to lifelong learning.
The Lang family’s dedication to giving back to UW Bothell remains unwavering. “We still give to Natalie’s scholarship fund,” Marleigh said. “UW and UW Bothell are important to our family. The school helped us get past the most critical stages of grief [after Natalie died] by continuing to be involved in our lives and helping to keep the things that she started alive.”
Natalie’s story is one of resilience, compassion, and enduring impact. Her legacy lives on through the students she helped and the scholarship that bears her name, ensuring that her spirit of generosity continues to benefit future generations.
