The Marshall Scholarship Foundation recently participated in Marshall High School’s scholarship awards night, held on May 22, 2024. This year, the foundation proudly facilitated scholarships totaling over $102,000, with a significant portion of $65,700 contributed directly by the Marshall Scholarship Foundation.
Among the scholarships facilitated by the Marshall Scholarship Foundation were those from the Mary W. Stremmer Educational Trust Fund, as well as $24,000 worth of scholarships generated from donated funds and proceeds from various fundraisers. Notably, the foundation announced a major fundraiser scheduled to take place at the Barrel Inn on November 2, 2024.
Established two decades ago, the Marshall Scholarship Foundation has demonstrated its steadfast commitment to supporting local students. Over the years, the foundation has awarded nearly $636,000 in scholarship funds to nearly 700 graduates of Marshall High School.
This year’s scholarship awards night also included the presentation of several new and special scholarships, each with its own meaningful legacy.
The Alan Purvis Memorial Scholarship, in the amount of $1,000, was awarded to Leonardo Rocha Sanchez. This scholarship honors the memory of Alan Purvis, a dedicated advocate for public education and a founding member of the Marshall Scholarship Foundation. Purvis’ contributions to education in the Marshall community were profound, and his legacy continues to inspire future generations.
Grayson Armstrong was the recipient of the Daniel Veith Memorial Scholarship, also valued at $1,000. This scholarship commemorates the generosity and philanthropic spirit of Daniel Scott Veith, a lifelong resident of Waterloo who expressed a deep commitment to supporting educational initiatives in Marshall and Waterloo.
The Ponti Family Scholarship, awarded $500 to Miles Zimmerman, celebrates the patriotism and service of Pete Ponti, a Vietnam War veteran and dedicated member of the Marshall community. Ponti’s commitment to promoting patriotism and educating youth exemplifies the values upheld by this scholarship.
Additionally, the Tyler Tweed Memorial Scholarship, honoring the memory of Tyler Tweed, was presented to Kody Finke. Tweed’s legacy of kindness and dedication to service lives on through this scholarship, which aims to support students with an interest in the trades.
The Catherine Lazers Bauer Scholarship, awarded $1,000 each to Nora Shelton and Miles Zimmerman, pays tribute to the legacy of Catherine Lazers Bauer, a beloved Marshall resident and advocate for creative writing. Bauer’s passion for storytelling and education continues to inspire through this scholarship, which commemorates her 100th birthday.
