Thailand is set to introduce significant changes to its visa rules, including easier entry procedures, new visa categories, and extended visa-free stays. The Thai Cabinet approved these measures in late May 2024, with the aim of boosting the economy and tourism sector.
These changes will be implemented in three stages: short, medium, and long-term. In the short term, several measures are expected to take effect by late June or early July 2024:
Extension of visa exemption for tourists and short-term business visitors to 60 days, up from the previous 30 days, for passport holders from 93 countries/territories.
Expansion of the number of countries/regions eligible for Visa on Arrival (VOA) from 19 to 31.
Introduction of a new Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) for long-term travelers, including digital nomads, allowing stays of up to 180 days per visit on a multiple-entry basis, valid for five years. This visa also covers participation in cultural activities.
Enhancement of the non-immigrant visa to facilitate international students’ travel and post-graduation employment opportunities in Thailand, allowing them to extend their stay for one year after graduation.
Establishment of a Visa Policy Committee to enhance entry processes and immigration efficiency.
In the medium term, measures include streamlining non-immigrant visa types, revising health insurance requirements, and expanding the list of countries eligible for long-term non-immigrant visas. Additionally, the e-Visa system will be implemented at all Thai embassies and consulates worldwide by December 2024.
Looking ahead, the long-term measure involves the introduction of the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system, set to be implemented at international airports in Thailand by June 2025. These changes aim to modernize Thailand’s visa system and enhance the overall travel experience for visitors.
