Overview: Applications are now open for the 2025 Rhodes Southern Africa Scholarships Programme. This prestigious and fully funded postgraduate award allows talented young individuals from Southern Africa to study at the University of Oxford. Rhodes Scholars spend two or more years in the UK, studying most full-time postgraduate courses offered by Oxford University.
Scholarships Distribution:
South Africa-at-Large Scholarships: Apply through the Regional Selection Committee relevant to your permanent residence or educational background. Successful candidates will advance to the South Africa-at-Large Selection Committee, which may select eight scholars.
Regional Committees:
Eastern Cape and Free State
KwaZulu-Natal
Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and North-West
Western Cape and Northern Cape
KwaZulu-Natal Scholarship: For candidates with a significant connection to KwaZulu-Natal, one candidate is selected annually.
Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia, and eSwatini (BLMNS) Scholarship: One candidate is selected annually from these countries.
Eligibility Criteria:
Nationality/Citizenship: Must be a citizen or legal permanent resident of South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia, or eSwatini. Refugees/asylum seekers in South Africa are also considered.
Residency: Must have resided in the mentioned countries for at least five of the last ten years.
Age:
General candidates: Born between 1 October 2000 and 1 October 2006.
Older candidates: Born between 1 October 1997 and 1 October 2006, must have completed their undergraduate degree within the last two years.
MBBCh or MBChB graduates: Born after 1 October 1997, should apply during their second year of internship or community service year.
Other health sciences graduates: Should seek exemption to apply during their internship or community service year if born after 1 October 1997.

Two economy class flights (to and from the UK)
Settling-in allowance upon arrival in Oxford
Assistance for visa renewal and further application for IHS for a second course of study
Academic Achievement Requirements:
Completion of an undergraduate degree by July 2025
Academic qualifications that meet or exceed Oxford’s entry requirements:
First Class Honours Degree or equivalent
GPA of 3.70/4.0 or higher
Honours degree from an international university or a Master’s degree (with some exceptions for South Africa and Namibia)
Application Process:
Complete and submit the online application form by 23:59 SAST, 1 August 2024
No application fee is required
Apply for the Rhodes Scholarship before applying for the proposed course at Oxford
Selected candidates will apply for their chosen course via Oxford’s graduate application form with support from Rhodes House
Re-application:
If unsuccessful, candidates may re-apply only once more, subject to eligibility criteria.
