Three University of Montana graduates have been awarded Fulbright Scholarships, granting them the opportunity to study and conduct research abroad this year.
The Fulbright U.S. Student Program, which operates in over 140 countries, allows recipients to pursue graduate studies, research, or teach English while fostering cross-cultural exchange and academic growth. This year’s UM recipients will join over 100 past UM students and alumni who have received this prestigious award.
Scholarship Recipients and Their Plans:
Emma Simuns, Missoula: Simuns will study social work in Italy, specifically engaging with social impact organizations to examine the effectiveness of programs in southern Italy. She will be enrolled in the Social and Political Science Department at the University of Catania. Simuns, who completed her master’s in social work this spring, intends to present her research findings at Missoula Works and through the Roberts Enterprise Development Fund upon her return.
Elizabeth Wrzesinski, Bozeman: Wrzesinski will serve as an English teaching assistant in Taiwan. A recent graduate with a media arts degree in digital filmmaking, Wrzesinski aims to gain professional experience to further her filmmaking career. Additionally, the opportunity holds personal significance for Wrzesinski, who was adopted from China and is eager to reconnect with her heritage. She plans to use her experiences in Taiwan to create films that highlight diverse stories.
Sophia Wilder, Lolo: Wilder received a Fulbright Scholarship to study coastal communities and regional development in Iceland. Despite being awarded the scholarship, she has chosen to pursue a Ph.D. at the University of California, Santa Cruz instead. Wilder, who graduated with a bachelor’s degree in environmental studies, has a history of academic excellence, having received multiple scholarships and fellowships during her time at UM.
University’s Statement:
Kylla Benes, director of the UM Office of External Scholarships and Fellowships, praised the recipients, noting their significant contributions both on campus and in the Missoula community. “UM’s emphasis on experiential learning combined with its world-class education sets our candidates apart for prestigious scholarships like the Fulbright,” Benes said.
The Fulbright Program continues to support students in expanding their academic and personal horizons while promoting international understanding and cooperation.
