In a deeply moving moment, a McKinley High senior was awarded a scholarship on Thursday night, symbolizing hope and continuity amidst tragedy.
Stacy Cabusas received a $3,000 scholarship during a poignant ceremony held within the McKinley auditorium. The funds were raised by Chevy Saniatan, the mother of Sara Yara, who tragically lost her life in a hit-and-run incident while walking to school in February 2023.
Yara’s mother, Chevy Saniatan, highlighted Cabusas’ passion for computer science, the same field that Sara aspired to pursue. Saniatan expressed her emotions, saying, “My daughter’s not here to go to college. But I am so proud of my daughter, leaving a legacy behind that we could raise money so that we can put other students to go forward and pursue something that she wanted to pursue — now that she’s not here.”
The scholarship, a testament to Sara Yara’s memory, aims to support students like Cabusas annually in their academic endeavors, perpetuating Sara’s aspirations and honoring her legacy.
This initiative exemplifies the strength and resilience of a community coming together to transform tragedy into opportunity, ensuring that Sara Yara’s spirit continues to inspire and uplift future generations.
