Amidst a troubling rise in antisemitism on college campuses nationwide, Touro University has announced an expansion of the Touro Safe Campus Scholarship. This initiative aims to assist students affected by antisemitic incidents by alleviating tuition costs for those who choose to transfer to Touro’s New York School of Career and Applied Studies (NYSCAS) for the upcoming fall semester. The Scholarship, initially launched earlier this year in response to campus unrest following the October 7 attacks, seeks to ensure a safe and inclusive academic environment for all students.
Touro University, renowned for maintaining a campus environment free from conflict and focused on education, is dedicated to providing financial support to students seeking refuge in a secure academic setting. With its main campus situated in the heart of Times Square, New York City, Touro University boasts a diverse student body of over 19,000 individuals across 36 campuses spanning six states. Notably, this year has witnessed a notable increase in enrollment within the Touro University system.
At its undergraduate NYSCAS division, Touro offers a seamless transition to its esteemed graduate and professional programs for eligible students. Notably, Touro is home to the only medical and dental school in the nation under Jewish auspices.
While Touro was established within the historic Jewish tradition of tolerance and dignity, its student body today reflects a rich tapestry of diversity, encompassing individuals from various economic, racial, and religious backgrounds.
Dr. Alan Kadish, President of Touro University, expressed the institution’s commitment to providing a nurturing environment conducive to academic success. “Our students choose Touro because they recognize our dedication to providing a rigorous education within a diverse and inclusive community,” Dr. Kadish stated. “College students should be able to focus on their studies without fear of hate, violence, or antisemitism. Touro remains steadfast in its mission to uphold these principles and safeguard the pursuit of higher education.”
The Touro Safe Campus Scholarship is now available to eligible transfer students who join Touro NYSCAS for the Fall 2024 semester from institutions where they feel unsafe or uncomfortable. To qualify for this scholarship, transfer students must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher. Recipients will receive awards equivalent to 25% of tuition per semester, in addition to other applicable financial aid, for up to seven semesters. Continued eligibility is contingent upon maintaining a 3.0 GPA at Touro and scholarships are applicable exclusively to tuition expenses.
