China’s Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Zheng Zeguang, recently paid a visit to the University of Oxford, emphasizing the importance of fostering robust educational exchanges between China and the UK.
During his visit, Ambassador Zheng engaged in discussions with Irene Tracey, the university’s vice-chancellor, focusing on enhancing collaborative efforts between Oxford and Chinese academic institutions. Furthermore, meetings were held with leaders and representatives from various departments within the university, including the Said Business School, the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences Oxford Institute (COI), and the Department of Engineering Science. These interactions underscored the existing partnerships between these academic entities and their counterparts in China.
Ambassador Zheng emphasized China’s unwavering commitment to educational openness, encouraging students to pursue studies abroad. He articulated the pivotal role such individuals could play as future leaders within Chinese society and as facilitators of communication and collaboration between China and the global community.
At the Said Business School, discussions revolved around ongoing dialogues with numerous business schools in China. Deputy Dean Jonathan Reynolds highlighted the development of education modules aimed at providing students with insights into the evolving Chinese market and equipping them with the necessary tools for conducting business in the country. These programs incorporate both classroom learning and practical sessions at various Chinese companies across different regions.
Ambassador Zheng expressed optimism regarding the deepening ties between the Said Business School and its Chinese counterparts, emphasizing the potential for British individuals to engage in business operations in China or collaborate with Chinese enterprises through the school’s initiatives.
Dean of the Said Business School, Soumitra Dutta, echoed Ambassador Zheng’s sentiments, acknowledging China’s significant global influence as the world’s second-largest economy. He affirmed the school’s commitment to fostering connections between East and West, including the development of online courses focusing on Chinese companies’ innovations.
During his visit to the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences Oxford Institute (COI), Ambassador Zheng underscored the importance of transcending national boundaries in scientific endeavors. He expressed hopes for the institute to make further strides in promoting China-UK technological cooperation and enhancing global welfare.
As the first medical sciences institute in the UK established by China, COI offers ample opportunities for collaboration and exchange. Founding Director Dong Tao highlighted initiatives such as selecting Chinese students enrolled in medical courses at 14 universities in China to pursue doctoral studies at the University of Oxford’s Medical Sciences Division.
Ambassador Zheng also engaged with Chinese students studying at the University of Oxford, encouraging them to broaden their horizons, foster friendships, and contribute to closer exchanges and cooperation between China and the international community during their time in the UK.
