The U.S. Embassy in Kampala is calling for applications from academically talented Ugandan students interested in pursuing BA or MA degrees in the United States to join the 2024 EducationUSA Scholars Program. This 12-month program is designed to provide intensive preparation for students seeking higher education opportunities in the United States.
It’s essential to note that the EducationUSA Scholars Program is not a scholarship but a preparation program aimed at facilitating access to U.S. higher education through advising and mentoring during the application process.
Selected students will have the opportunity to work closely with the EducationUSA office at the U.S. Embassy and the Kampala American Center, receiving guidance and support as they navigate the admissions process for colleges and universities in the United States. Through regular seminars and individual advising sessions, students will receive assistance in preparing their applications and enhancing their chances of securing admission and financial assistance to commence studies in the United States in August 2025.
Selection for the EducationUSA Scholars Program will be based on academic records, essay writing, leadership skills, and a virtual interview. Additionally, among the 30 finalist candidates, 10 economically disadvantaged students will be chosen to participate in the Opportunity Fund Program.
The Opportunity Fund Program aims to support academically talented but economically disadvantaged international students who are competitive for full financial aid but lack the financial resources to apply to universities in the United States. Selected students will receive assistance with upfront costs associated with the application process, including application fees, standardized testing, internet data costs, visa fees, and international airfare. However, it’s important to note that participation in the Opportunity Fund Program does not guarantee acceptance or financial aid awards at U.S. institutions.
Eligibility criteria for the Opportunity Fund Program in Uganda include citizenship or official refugee status in Uganda, demonstrated financial need, application to Bachelor’s/Master’s/PhD programs at accredited U.S. higher education institutions in fall 2024, and application for full financial aid. Additionally, specific academic requirements apply, such as scoring 18 to 20 points in UACE for Bachelor’s applicants and holding a first degree for graduate studies applicants.
Students who are not selected for the Opportunity Fund Program should be prepared to cover the costs of the university application process independently, including registration fees for SAT and TOEFL examinations, college application fees, and SEVIS/VISA fees.
Applications for the 2024 EducationUSA Scholars Program close on Tuesday, April 30th, 2024, at 5:00 pm EAT. Interested students are encouraged to apply and take advantage of this valuable opportunity for academic and personal growth.
