Colorado State University (CSU) is expanding its first-year study abroad offerings with the introduction of seven new locations for upcoming semesters. These additions aim to provide incoming students with the chance to immerse themselves in different cultures and gain valuable experiences in a small-group learning setting.
With a total of 12 first-year study abroad options now available, CSU is broadening its scope to offer diverse opportunities for students. Among the new locations scheduled for the fall 2024 semester are Spain, Ireland, Japan, Denmark, Croatia, Australia, Italy, and Germany. These programs cater to various academic disciplines, including business, biology, design, merchandising, chemical and biological engineering, and mechanical engineering.
Nicole Pawloski, a program manager at CSU’s Office of International Programs, expressed enthusiasm for the expansion, highlighting the benefits these programs offer to students. Each program grants participants three academic credits, fulfilling the university’s All University Core Curriculum 1C requirement. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to travel abroad for 10-14 days before the start of the fall semester, providing them with a culturally enriching experience and fostering a strong sense of community.
The locations for these programs may vary from year to year based on available opportunities and the interests of students. Each program is designed to incorporate guest lectures, industry visits, cultural experiences, and academic excursions relevant to the respective fields of study. These experiences aim to enhance students’ confidence, global awareness, and ability to engage with diverse perspectives.
Charlotte Salinas, Assistant Director of Orientation Programs, shared her involvement with the first-year study abroad programs, emphasizing the transformative impact they have on students. Salinas recounted her experiences leading trips to Ecuador in 2022 and 2023, where students engaged in a range of educational and cultural activities, forging lasting connections with their peers.
Nicole Vieira, an Honors Program instructor, reflected on her participation in a social and environmental justice program in Ecuador in August 2023. Vieira described the program as a transformative experience, highlighting the opportunity for hands-on learning and cultural immersion. Despite facing unexpected challenges, such as a political event necessitating a change in plans, Vieira praised the resilience of the students and the support provided by CSU’s Office of International Programs.
Ultimately, these first-year study abroad programs serve as a bridge between high school and college, offering students a unique opportunity to explore their interests, connect with peers, and prepare for the academic challenges ahead. As CSU continues to expand its offerings, it aims to foster a vibrant and inclusive community where students can thrive both academically and personally.
