Santa Rosa Junior College (SRJC) students eager to broaden their horizons will have the chance to immerse themselves in the diverse traditions and customs of London this upcoming fall semester through SRJC’s esteemed study abroad program.
Set to depart on September 5, the SRJC Study Abroad program will take students on a transformative three-month journey in London, England. Alongside exploring iconic landmarks and partaking in cultural experiences, students will enroll in 12 units of transferable college courses, offering a unique blend of academic rigor and experiential learning.
In addition to SRJC coursework, students will have the opportunity to engage with instructors from Contra Costa, Los Rios, and San Mateo Community College Districts. Notably, SRJC Instructor Anne Belden will lead courses in journalism and media studies, enriching students’ academic experience abroad.
A diverse range of courses spanning history, communications, and English will be available to students, with a mandatory British Life and Culture course offering insights into the rich tapestry of British history, politics, customs, and architecture. Faculty members from English universities will supplement classroom learning with engaging lectures and weekly excursions.
“Studying abroad in London will be a life-changing experience,” remarked Anne Belden, underscoring the profound impact of international education on students’ personal and professional growth. She emphasized the acquisition of intercultural competence, problem-solving skills, and adaptability as invaluable assets gained through the study abroad experience.
The program fee, starting at $9,495, encompasses various amenities such as housing in a homestay, transportation passes, and medical insurance. Weekly subsidized activities, including museum visits and full-day excursions, offer students immersive cultural experiences in the vibrant city of London.
Facilitating the study abroad experience is the American Institute for Foreign Study (AIFS), which collaborates with the participating community colleges to oversee housing arrangements, cultural activities, and student services. AIFS also provides comprehensive student counseling and emergency support services, ensuring a seamless and enriching experience for participants.
Students can opt for either a homestay accommodation or a student residence, each offering unique amenities and opportunities for cultural immersion. Optional trips to destinations like Edinburgh and Loch Ness are also available to students keen on exploring beyond London’s borders.
To qualify for the Study Abroad program, SRJC students must meet certain eligibility criteria, including being at least 18 years old and maintaining a GPA of 2.25 or higher. Anne Belden will host informational sessions on March 4 and March 11 to provide students with detailed insights into the program and answer any queries they may have.
