As Study Abroad Day approaches on Feb. 26, Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) is highlighting its commitment to fostering global opportunities in education through diverse programs and initiatives. From overseas study programs to on-campus communities, VCU aims to enhance access to transformative experiential learning experiences for all students.
Stephanie Tignor, director of global learning in the Global Education Office, emphasized VCU’s dedication to serving a diverse student population, particularly those underrepresented in education abroad nationally. Tignor stated, “All of the things that we do as an office have that top of mind.”
One of VCU’s initiatives is the Black + Abroad event series, co-sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs. This program focuses on providing firsthand accounts of overseas study experiences for Black students. A panel discussion on Feb. 27 will delve into the complexities of global citizenship and international travel for Black students. VCU also offers $500 vouchers to incentivize participation in study abroad opportunities.
Tignor stressed the importance of representation for Black students in study abroad programs, stating, “It’s really important to utilize representation as a way for Black students to see themselves studying abroad.”
As part of this year’s Black + Abroad program, Black international students will share their experiences studying abroad in the U.S. Tignor highlighted the importance of recognizing the diverse experiences of international students, noting differences between students from Africa and African American students.
VCU’s efforts to promote global education extend to campus-based programs such as the Global Village in the Gladding Residence Center. This program fosters cultural exchange and community-building through lectures, workshops, and events that showcase international perspectives.
The Global Education Office also collaborates with VCU’s federally funded TRIO program to offer service-learning trips, such as the upcoming trip to Las Canas in the Dominican Republic. Tignor emphasized the importance of including underrepresented populations in such initiatives, particularly first-generation and low-income students.
To address financial barriers to study abroad, VCU offers scholarships and resources such as the Airfare Voucher Award and the L&L Friendship Fund. Additionally, the GEO provides free passport photos to students and employees to simplify the passport application process.
By proactively addressing concerns and barriers for underrepresented students, VCU aims to ensure that study abroad participants reflect the diverse student body of the university. Tignor stated, “We hope our study abroad participants more accurately represent the rich diversity of VCU’s student body.”
