As the second anniversary of the invasion approaches next week, approximately 200,200 Ukrainians and their family members have sought refuge in the United Kingdom. These individuals, who arrived following the invasion, were initially granted a three-year stay, with the first visas slated to expire in March 2025. However, a recent government decision has extended their stay, ensuring that those with the earliest visas can remain until at least September 2026.
The extension, aimed at providing “certainty and stability” to the affected individuals, encompasses all three visa schemes established in response to the invasion: the Homes for Ukraine scheme, the Ukraine Family Scheme, and the Ukraine Extension Scheme. Under these schemes, beneficiaries will retain their rights to employment, benefits, healthcare, and education.
Migration minister Tom Pursglove lauded the generosity of British families who have welcomed Ukrainian refugees, emphasizing the nation’s commitment to offering a safe haven to those fleeing conflict. He announced that applications for visa extensions would be open from early 2025, with individuals eligible to apply within the last three months of their existing visa.
The decision to extend visas underscores the UK government’s belief in the eventual restoration of safety in Ukraine, with hopes that its citizens will be able to return home when conditions permit. Eduard Fesko, charge d’affaires at the Ukrainian embassy in the UK, hailed the move as a “clear signal” of the UK’s support for Ukraine, expressing gratitude for the assistance provided to displaced Ukrainians.
This announcement coincides with the Munich Security Conference, where global leaders are convening to address pressing security concerns. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky utilized the platform to urgently appeal for additional weaponry, citing its crucial role in averting a potential catastrophe in Europe. Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron reaffirmed Britain’s steadfast support for Ukraine and urged other allies, particularly the US, to maintain their assistance.
However, challenges persist, as political gridlock in the US Congress hampers the passage of a $60 billion aid package earmarked for Ukraine. Republican lawmakers are demanding further action to secure the US-Mexico border before endorsing the aid package. Despite this setback, Lord Cameron emphasized the collective strength of Ukraine’s allies and the imperative of leveraging diplomatic, military, economic, and moral support to make a meaningful difference in the conflict.
