Portland State University (PSU) offers an array of exciting and culturally enriching study abroad programs for students seeking a deeper understanding of various subjects. The programs, led by experienced faculty members, provide unique perspectives and hands-on experiences, offering a blend of academic rigor and cultural exploration.
Literary London – Texts and Contexts
Led by English Professor Dr. Keri Behre, the Literary London program from July 8–20, 2024, promises a comprehensive exploration of English literature within the historical and cultural backdrop of London. The four-credit English 399 course includes guided readings and discussions before the trip. Students will embark on tours, visiting iconic literary sites such as the Tower of London, the Globe Theatre, and the British Library. An optional trip to the shrine of Julian of Norwich provides an opportunity for a deeper connection with medieval literature.
While the cost of living in London is relatively high, Behre has designed the program to be as affordable as possible, with shared apartments and a focus on minimizing expenses. The program aims to foster a connection between students and the rich cultural tapestry of London.
Popular Culture, K-Pop in Seoul
Professor Michael Lupro leads the Popular Culture, K-Pop in Seoul program from Aug. 24 through Sep. 4, 2024. Analyzing the global impact of Korean cultural production, the four-credit University Studies course delves into Korean media, arts, and communication systems. Lupro’s approach emphasizes understanding the production of cultural phenomena such as K-pop through visits to media firms, advertising companies, and experiences like dance classes with a K-pop choreographer.
The program offers unique insights into the global influence of Korean pop culture, with opportunities to go behind the scenes of media production. Lupro highlights the convenience of the program, including transportation, SIM cards, hotels, travel insurance, and most meals, all organized by local guides.
Architecture of Mexico City
Professor Juan Heredia, Director of the School of Architecture at PSU, leads the Architecture of Mexico City program from Aug. 4–17, 2024. While prioritizing architecture students, the program welcomes students from various majors, offering a unique perspective on Mexico City’s cultural history through its architecture. Exploring archaeological sites, colonial architecture, and national museums, students gain insights into Mexico’s rich history.
The program, offering six credits, includes readings, lectures, group discussions, sketchbooking, and a retrospective presentation. Heredia emphasizes the program’s ability to provide a synthetic experience of Mexico City’s cultural evolution, connecting students with the city’s diverse architectural landscape.
Arte y Cerebros en Chile
Art and neuroscience come together in the Arte y Cerebros en Chile program led by artist Jeff Leake and neuroscientist Bill Griesar. Taking place from June 28 to July 26, 2024, in Valparaíso, Chile, the program explores the intersection of neuroscience and community arts. Students will delve into the nature of perception and cultural biases by studying neuroscience in an international context.
The program offers a unique blend of scientific exploration and artistic expression, with opportunities to create arpilleras—a Chilean tradition of representing memory or trauma through patchwork tapestries. The communal nature of the course, including interactions with locals and homestay families, adds depth to the cultural experience.
As students contemplate their study abroad options, these programs stand as gateways to intellectual, cultural, and personal growth. The deadline to apply for most summer programs is Jan. 31, providing students with the chance to embark on a transformative journey and broaden their horizons. Interested students can reach out to lead faculty members and attend upcoming information sessions for more details.
