Türkiye has extended its visa-free entry program to nationals of four Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, effective from December 23, 2023. President Tayyip Erdogan issued a presidential decree, allowing citizens from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Oman, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia to spend up to 90 days within a 180-day period in Türkiye without requiring a visa.
In a bid to facilitate travel for expatriates residing in GCC countries, Türkiye is also introducing e-visa options. Eligible travelers from Algeria, Egypt, India, Iraq, Libya, Pakistan, Palestine, the Philippines, and Yemen, holding valid visas or residence permits from Schengen countries, the USA, UK, or Ireland, can apply for the e-visa.
Turkish Airlines, Türkiye’s national carrier, has lauded this decision, anticipating that it will strengthen diplomatic ties and boost tourist numbers in 2024. Ahmet Bolat, Chairman of the Board and the Executive Committee at Turkish Airlines, expressed his support, emphasizing the airline’s commitment to providing enhanced services for travelers.
Bolat stated, “Türkiye is continuing to expand its international relations with the new presidential decree issued to exempt visas for nationals of UAE, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and Oman. Turkish Airlines supports the visa exemptions, making travel even easier through free layover services for our flyers.”
Turkish Airlines offers a unique opportunity for passengers flying via Istanbul airport. Transit passengers are entitled to explore Istanbul free of charge, unlocking two destinations with one flight ticket. The airline provides two layover services, including a complimentary city tour and a free hotel stay, encouraging passengers to discover the beauty of Istanbul during their transit.
For passengers with layover times ranging from 6 to 24 hours, Touristanbul offers a complimentary city tour service with eight different guided tours. Additionally, those with at least a 20-hour layover can independently explore Istanbul with the ‘Stopover in Istanbul’ service, complete with complimentary accommodation at partner hotels.
In 2023, Turkish Airlines reported a significant increase in passenger numbers, with a 16.1% rise to 83.4 million compared to the same period in 2022. As of December 2023, the airline boasts a fleet of 440 aircraft, reflecting its robust growth in the aviation sector.
