The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire has earned national recognition for its outstanding participation in study abroad programs, ranking 15th among master’s-level colleges and universities in the United States, as revealed in the 2023 Open Doors Report by the Institute of International Education.
The report, based on study abroad statistics from the academic year 2021-22, showcases the commitment of 254 UW-Eau Claire students to international studies, solidifying the university’s position as a leader among both public and private master’s-level institutions. This distinction makes UW-Eau Claire the top-ranked master’s-level university in Wisconsin and Minnesota.
Furthermore, the university secured the 17th spot in the master’s-level category for mid-length duration programs (a quarter or semester) with 99 students, while ranking 20th in the short-term category with 156 participating students.
Despite the challenges posed by COVID-19 travel restrictions during the 2021-22 academic year, UW-Eau Claire’s dedication to fostering global perspectives remained evident. Vicki Marchwick, director of the Center for International Education, emphasizes the resilience of the students who pursued study abroad opportunities, reflecting their commitment to personal and academic growth.
Marchwick expressed optimism about the continuous growth of UW-Eau Claire’s study abroad statistics, citing the numerous academic and professional benefits associated with international experiences. Currently offering programs in over 30 countries, the university’s most popular destinations in 2021-22 included Spain, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Costa Rica.
Elise Tipcke, a double major in nursing and Spanish, shared her transformative experience studying abroad in Valladolid, Spain, during the spring of 2022. She later engaged in a two-week faculty-led immersion program in Guatemala. Tipcke emphasized the profound impact of studying abroad, stating that it not only broadened her worldview but also provided valuable insights into different cultures and herself.
