A pivotal high school program that allowed students at Graham High School to obtain a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) license became the starting point for Abigail Hurst’s educational journey. Her trajectory led her to the Wilson School of Nursing at Midwestern State University (MSU Texas), where she recently graduated with a bachelor’s degree in nursing on December 16.
Reflecting on her educational path, Hurst acknowledged the foundational support she received in high school. The comprehensive program equipped students with medical terminology, anatomy, nutrition, and hands-on patient care experience. The practical exposure allowed them to shadow nurses at a local hospital, obtain CPR certification, and acquire the skills and knowledge necessary for the CNA exam.
While initially majoring in nursing, Hurst also pursued a minor in French—a decision that may seem unconventional to some but held personal significance. Associate Professor of French Eric Lynch played a pivotal role in encouraging her French studies. As a Redwine Scholar, she was required to participate in a study abroad program. Despite facing delays due to COVID-related cancellations, she eventually had the opportunity to study in France in 2021 and, later, traveled to London with the nursing program.
During her experiences abroad, she gained valuable insights into community health and observed the nuances of healthcare systems in different countries. This exposure contributed to her growing confidence, especially as she explored unfamiliar territories despite being naturally introverted.
Apart from her academic pursuits, Hurst engaged in various activities at MSU Texas. She collaborated with Assistant Professor of Nursing Sandra Groth on a project creating a flyer about toddler milestones. Additionally, she joined the Gamma Phi Beta sorority and the nursing fraternity Sigma Theta Tau.
Over the past year, Hurst worked as a student assistant in the Disability Support Services Office at MSU Texas. She appreciates the flexibility and diversity that a nursing career offers, allowing professionals to specialize in various areas such as pediatrics, geriatrics, mental health, oncology, surgery, and beyond the traditional hospital setting.
Hurst, inspired by her mother and fellow MSU Texas alumna, Morgan Ervin, developed a passion for women’s health. She aspires to work in mother/baby nursing, encompassing antepartum, labor and delivery, and postpartum care. Expressing her enthusiasm for the profession, Hurst hopes to continue her education and eventually become a Certified Nurse Midwife in the future.
